This garden, designed for the Horticultural Department of Iowa State University in Ames Iowa, has both formal and informal spaces where the Horticulture Department can demonstrate and display various garden techniques and styles. Also included is a formal rose display garden. A swale, which runs in front of the gardens, has been designed to replicate the natural stream habitats found in the region. Later phases of the garden will recall Iowa's natural and man-made landscapes and provide public display and teaching spaces.
The design includes siting for a new campanile which recalls the well known tower on Iowa States’ campus. The new campanile will be proportional in scale to the campus original and will serve both as a terminus of the main gardens axis and to mark the main entrance to the campus. The main gardens are also the home of the new horticulture building and maintenance facility designed by Walker Metzger Architects of Des Moines Iowa. Erik Karlsson was project landscape architect for CLRR, Inc.
