Azalea Garden Trail Renovation
Winterthur Museum in Wilmington Delaware wanted to change the existing gravel trails in their renowned azalea gardens. The new trails will be a softer wood chip material and include under-drainage to reduce the degrading of the trail material. The new system also allows for an easy replacement of the wood chips when needed. A trail project priority was the protection of the valuable azalea and rhododendron collect which they pass through. Erik Karlsson was designer and project landscape architect for Simone Collins. His work included research for successful examples, design and construction document preparation.
The project also included design for two other areas to create visual screening for the main garden from nearby service and teaching areas. Design of new evergreen screen plantings in the peony garden. Also extensive screen plantings and new planting beds and a new parking lot layout in and around the teaching gardens, greenhouses and employee parking lot.
