Stormwater Management Design

SmithKline Beecham Clinical Laboratories
Located in East Norriton, Pennsylvania this facility has one acre of roof, in addition to roads and parking. To provide stormwater penetration for aquifer recharge and to avoid a large unsightly stormwater basin the SKBL project located groundwater recharge beds beneath porous pavement in the parking bays. Stormwater penetrates directly through the asphalt parking surfaces and into the gravel-filled beds below where it infiltrates into the subsurface aquifer.

The well-concieved site and landscape plan allowed the preservation of an existing oak-beech woodland. Native plants were installed throughout the parking lots and building landscape and a restored wetland to blend with the surrounding natural features. Pedestrian walkways provide safe circulation from car to office.

This project was the recipient of a Planning Merit Award from the Montgomery County Planning Commission in 1990 for innovative stormwater management site design and landscape plan. Erik Karlsson was landscape architect for Andropogon Associates providing design documentation and construction observation with Cahill Associates engineers and Francis, Cauffman, Foley & Hoffmann architects.
